Canada’s Walk of Fame, just like its Hollywood counterpart, is a permanent place to honour and recognize the achievements of famous Canadians in music, sport, film, and television, as well as in the literary, visual, and performing arts, and science. Originally started in 1998, Canada’s Walk of Fame has featured many compelling and inspirational individuals.

It is a non-profit, registered charity and a volunteer-driven organization. Recently, the Harper Government invested in the performing arts in Toronto, with the goal of stimulating job creation and economic growth. This included extra funding for the Walk of Fame Festival. The Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, James Moore has said of the project, “Our Government is proud to invest in projects that contribute to our collective identity and define who we are as Canadians.” The Federal Government has provided funding of $500,000 through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage.

The Walk of Fame Festival is presented at Massey Hall, Nathan Phillips Square, and other locations in the city. The Festival coincides with the Awards Ceremony. During the festival, visitors can experience a three-day long event featuring performances by many Canadian artists. The best part? Most of these shows are free!

Just recently, the Walk of Fame put out a call to all Canadians to participate in the annual nomination promotion. The next event takes place on Saturday, September 21 2013.

Here are just some of the inductees over the past 15 years:

1972’s Team Canada (Sport), Sarah McLachlan (Music), Nelly Furtado (Music), Eric McCormack (Actor), Denys Arcand (Film), Jim Carrey (Film), Diana Krall (Music), Nickelback (Music), Gordon Pinsent (Actor), Lloyd Robertson (Television).

Khao San Road is Bangkok’s infamous backpacker ghetto, a pit stop for travelers following the banana pancake trail through Asia. The road is lined with seedy hostels, cheap bars, and restaurants (this term is loosely used) for vagabonds and down-on-their-luck travelers to curb their hunger.

Khao San Road, Toronto, is a Thai restaurant in the west end of the Entertainment district, praised by patrons as a “can’t-miss” with authentic Thai cuisine. How exactly do these two images fit together? Well, restaurant owners Jeff and Nuit Regular, who also happen to be husband and wife as well as chefs, wanted to create an authentically Thai restaurant. One you’d actually likely find in Thailand, rather than the typical Thai restaurants that are scattered throughout Toronto. Think: overstuffed with Buddhas, elephant carvings, and out of place room dividers. Rather than overwhelm diners with a larger than life Thai experience, the Regulars opted for a more modest and genuine background, shifting the focus to their bona fide Thai menu selections!

The décor is casual, with subdued earth tones and the occasional wooden inflection (dark for floors and distressed for tables), while a rotation of paintings from local artists adorns the far wall. The feel evoked is very urban loft and not out of place for the neighbourhood.

Some specialties to try include:

Street style pad thai ($13)

Gra Bong squash fritters ($7)

Massaman curry ($13 with a side of steamed rice)

Follow the links below to see their lunch, dinner and vegan dinner menus.

Regular Dinner Menu
Lunch Menu

It isn’t the menu and ironic name that has brought attention to Khao San Road recently though, but the sudden announcement of the Regulars pulling out of the restaurant. Apparently, the husband-and-wife team saw things different from each other, and decided to pull out of Khao San Road because of it. “We really don’t want to talk about it,” said Jeff to NOW Magazine. “It’s just something that came out of the blue.”

The two are now focusing on their other establishments: Church Street newcomer Sabai Sabai, where Nuit is the chef and the expansion of Sukhothai (run by Jeff’s parents) into the St. Lawrence Market area.

Diners, have no fear! The Regulars’ long-time associate Monte Wan has taken over the establishment, and Khao San Road will continue to provide great food at great prices!

It is no secret that Toronto has seen a steep increase in condominium construction over the past few years. In fact, there are over 100 development sites in progress in the downtown core alone. One noticeable consequence of this is the ubiquitous construction hoarding present on many of our streets. Construction hoarding is the fencing that surrounds most construction sites and is often used by developers to advertise their suites.

Often, the hoarding is less than appealing to those of us at street-level. That is why city counselors have begun to require temporary art installations to replace the large advertising signs often found on the fencing. Given that condo construction can take up to 5 years, this seems like a great idea to help beautify our downtown neighbourhoods.

About two years ago, city councilors Kristyn Wong-Tam, Adam Vaughan, and others began to ask developers for the installations. Their proposal faced some resistance at first, as developers preferred to keep their ads on the fencing. But the idea has taken hold and a temporary art component has even become required for approval for projects in many cases.

The details are as Ms. Wong-Tam outline them here:

“City council directs the applicant to provide and install public art, including mural artwork, onto every elevation of the hoarding board with adequate spotlighting for nighttime illumination, at their sole cost, to the satisfaction of the ward councillor.”

Brian Brown, of Lifetime Developments, has taken up the challenge of bringing colour the Bond’s construction hoarding. He has commissioned artist Mike Parsons to work on the installation for this 40 storey building currently underway at the corner of Adelaide and John.

Although a temporary piece, Mr. Parsons jumped on the opportunity to be in charge of the project. His mural will depict, quite ironically, the condo boom itself. It will also feature, according to him, some of the pros and cons of the boom.

“On the one side, I do see some troubles that condos are moving further and further into the city, so I do see this huge boom in condos that’s going to change the face of our city,” he said. “But on the other side, what makes great cities is the people.”

We look forward to seeing the art at the Bond take shape over the next few months, stay tuned for updates! For more information regarding Lifetime’s Bond, please feel free to contact us.

Lifetime Developments has become one of the premier development firms in Toronto’s fast-paced and competitive real estate industry. They have made a name for themselves with both residential and commercial spaces in terms of innovative design and architectural expertise. The company has evolved from its beginnings building detached homes in suburban areas to developing ever larger condominium projects in the downtown core.

A list of Lifetime’s downtown developments is impressive, with several notable buildings amongst them. The developments include The Four Seasons Private Residences, M5V, Victory Condos, Liberty Market Lofts, Indx Condos, Karma Condos, and the Bisha Hotel and Residences, which Lifetime intends to make into a major made-in Canada brand of hotels.

The Bond Condos is another new project by Lifetime Developments that is currently in its preconstruction stages and which will be built at 290 Adelaide Street West in the heart of the Entertainment District. This 40 storey building designed by Core Architects, with interiors by Thomas Pearce Interior Design Consulting makes an effort to have cutting edge modern style.

The six-storey podium will support a cleanly designed glass and steel tower. The main shaft that runs through the middle of the building is intended to look like a glass box.

Many of the Bond’s suites were sold earlier in the fall of 2012, they went on sale to the public in November and occupancy is expected for fall of 2015.

Lifetime got creative in generating buzz for The Bond. They ran a contest that invited local artists to design an ad for the Bond, playing on the project’s theme which is to create a bond between residents of the tower and the surrounding neighborhood. “It gave people the opportunity to talk about the fabric of the Entertainment District and through visuals convey the energy of the area,” says

Brian Brown, vice-president of Lifetime Developments. The 21 submissions were posted on Facebook where people could vote for their favorite, which was an ad that incorporated various building facades into its design.

The Bond (along with Bisha Hotel and Residences) is on its way to attracting some very interested investors through its introduction of a plan that guarantees this group of buyers rental income, free management and maintenance, and no realty taxes for the first two years of ownership. This will ensure that investors see a return of more than six percent per year on their investment. Lifetime Developments’ approach in this case is similar to the strategy that allowed them to nearly sell out Karma and INDX Condos.

Already over 80 percent sold, The Bond will be 40-soreys when complete. If you’re interested in purchasing a suite for yourself, contact us today to find out about your options!

The Bond has been a highly anticipated project for quite some time. The project’s modern architecture isn’t the only thing catching consumers’ attention – its urban interior design team, Tomas Pearce Interior Design, has put together impressive designs for the project.

Tomas Pearce Interior Design (TPIDC) is a Toronto based company led by Principals Melandro Quilatan and Tania Richardson. The company was founded in 2007. Both principals had been friends for quite a while working together at Gluckstein Design. Quilatan is a Ryerson graduate, where he studied interior design. He has over 18 years of industry experience. Richardson received her diploma in interior design from Sheridan College. She has had experience designing luxury homes, exclusive sales, and model suites.

The pair started the company with a team of 4, but today the team has grown to 18 professionals, including interior designers, project managers, stylists and an in-house graphic designer.

Interestingly, the person Tomas Pearce doesn’t actually exist. The name came about by combining two names important to each of the founders. Tomas is the middle name of Richardson’s son and Pearce is a name on Quilatan’s family side. The idea was not to brand the firm after the two principals. They strive to include everyone in a team effort.

TPIDC offers a variety of design services, space planning, project management and interior styling. Their design aesthetic, according to Quilatan is “Opulence, simplicity, elegance”. TPIDC’s design philosophy is to combine their sense of design and experience with the clients own style wishes. The firm has worked on a number of notable projects – luxury residences, private vacation homes, winter chalets, sales offices and model suites. Many of the firm’s project are outside Canada– in Spain, Dallas and Las Vegas.

The inspiration for The Bond was its location – the sophisticated and vibrant Entertainment District. The firm’s vision was to create a hip and exciting environment, fit for the urban young professional.

Coal Miner’s Daughter (CMD) on Queen Street opened this past April and is one of its two CMD locations in Toronto. It is a small boutique that specializes in Canadian jewellery and clothing, including designs by its owners Janine Cockburn-Haller and Krysten Caddy.

Janine’s clothing line, Clementine&Tweed, has been described as “fresh and feminine.” It uses both new and recycled material in the designs. Krysten’s jewellery, on the other hand, is a collection of sterling silver and fine gemstones.

Their stores vary in stock to avoid redundancy. Exclusive to the stores is the make-up line by Andrea Victory LaCasse called Pretty. It features chemical-free fragrances, make-up and nail polish.

The aim of the boutique is to provide “one-of-a-kind and few-of-a-kind” designs from Canadians. Designers include Sessie Dress skirts, Jennifer Glasgow, and Alice and Alishka. Most materials are organic or recycled, making this boutique even more unique.

Caddy has said that their aim is “to balance out well-made and socially-conscious clothes with accessibility.” In fact, most of the pieces in store are very reasonably priced – especially when compared to similar boutiques in the area. Dresses go for about $85, necklaces for about $30, and vintage shoes go for roughly $40.

Coal Miner’s Daughter, 744 Queen Street West, Monday-Wednesday 12-6, Thursday – Saturday 12-7, Sunday 12-6, http://www.coalminersdaughter.ca/home

Coke or Pepsi? Sprite or Fruitopia? These are some of the limited decisions that movie goers at Scotiabank Theatre were faced with in the past. But, as of May 2012, they will be limited no longer. Coca-Cola Freestyle just released their new Freestyle pop fountain at the Scotiabank Theatre, which may be the best thing since sliced bread!

The Freestyle pop fountain is a high-tech, touch-screen, soda-making machine that has over a hundred different Coca-Cola branded drinks available. One will SURELY find something they like. The machine is revolutionary and offers things that Canada has not seen before, including Pibb Zero and Minute Maid Light. It also offers drinks and flavours that are hard to come by, such as Orange Coke, Sprite Grape, and Barq’s Vanilla.

This machine is extraordinarily easy to use, and functions much like any standard soda fountain. One can select what they would like (Coke, for example) and then select the flavour of the brand (i.e., Coke Orange) if they so chose. The mechanics behind the machine are slightly more complex. It uses a micro-dosing technology called PurePour, which was formerly only found in medical equipment.

While the Scotiabank Theatre is the first to use this new technology, it will soon be found in theatres across the city. However, no one likes waiting, so we suggest that you head over to the Scotiabank Theatre to watch a movie and test this machine out!

The Scotiabank Theatre is situated in an ideal location, just two blocks north of The Bond condominium and in the heart of the Entertainment District. If you would like more information on The Bond or properties in this area, feel free to call Kaive at (416) 929-1660, or e-mail us at resupport@axoncapitalrealty.com. He and the rest of Team Axon would be happy to assist you in your search!
